These are the lakes most DFW residents reach for first — and for good reason. They're close, well-maintained, and genuinely great for a same-day charter without a long drive.

Lake Lewisville is the biggest and most versatile of the DFW-adjacent lakes — a 29,000-acre playground spread across Lewisville, The Colony, Little Elm, and Frisco. It's the most accessible large lake in North Texas, with multiple launch points, calm coves for floating and swimming, and enough open water to escape the crowd and find a glassy stretch for wakesurfing on even the busiest summer weekends.

Party Cove near Westlake Park is one of the most lively spots on any DFW lake — a popular summer gathering area where boaters anchor up and socialize. The Lewisville Lake Toll Bridge arch is a distinctive sunset landmark worth cruising past. And with 233 miles of shoreline and dozens of protected inlets, your captain will always be able to find calm water for surfing regardless of conditions on the main lake.

Lewisville is our most-booked lake and the top choice for groups coming from Frisco, Plano, The Colony, McKinney, Flower Mound, and Carrollton.

Best for: Families, groups from Southlake/Keller/Grapevine area, sunset charters, calmer water days

Lake Grapevine sits tucked between Grapevine, Southlake, Flower Mound, and Trophy Club — one of the most scenic and naturally sheltered lakes in the DFW area. At 8,000 acres it's smaller than Lewisville, which means less boat traffic on busy weekends and a noticeably calmer, more relaxed vibe on the water. The lake's wooded shoreline, rocky bluffs near Rockledge Park, and views of the Gaylord Texan Resort make it one of the most attractive lakes in the region to cruise.

Grapevine Lake's naturally protected coves make it an excellent choice for wakesurfing — your captain can almost always find glassy conditions in the lake's many inlets even when the main body has some chop. For sunset charters specifically, Grapevine is hard to beat — the light on the western shoreline in the evening is genuinely beautiful.

It's the closest large lake to DFW/Fort Worth International Airport, which makes it a convenient choice for groups flying in from out of town.

Lake Ray Roberts is one of North Texas's best-kept secrets for boating — a 29,000-acre reservoir nestled inside a sprawling state park system just 10 miles north of Denton and roughly an hour from most of the DFW metroplex. Because it sits farther from the densely populated northern suburbs than Lewisville or Grapevine, Ray Roberts draws significantly less weekend boat traffic despite being nearly the same size. More lake, fewer boats — that's the Ray Roberts proposition.

The lake is surrounded by Ray Roberts Lake State Park, which means the shoreline is almost entirely undeveloped natural land — wooded banks, open coves, and wildlife habitat that give the lake a more remote, natural feel than you'd expect this close to Dallas. Your captain can easily find an uncrowded stretch for wakesurfing while the rest of your group watches herons and egrets work the shallows. In cooler months, bald eagles occasionally winter near the lake's coves — a genuinely surprising wildlife encounter less than an hour from the city.

Ray Roberts is an excellent option for groups coming from Denton, Sanger, Pilot Point, Valley View, or any of the communities north of the metroplex.

These lakes require a bit more of a commitment — typically 1.5 to 4 hours from DFW — but they deliver an experience that the closer lakes simply can't match. Most groups who make the trip pair their charter with an overnight stay.

Lake Texoma is the biggest lake we operate on — one of the largest reservoirs in the entire United States at 89,000 acres, straddling the Texas-Oklahoma border along the Red River. Known widely as the "Playground of the Southwest," it draws approximately 6 million visitors annually and for good reason: at this scale, the lake genuinely feels like a different kind of experience from anything in the DFW area.

The range of coves, sandy beaches, and islands on Texoma is unmatched. North Island, Wood Island, and Treasure Island are popular anchoring spots where you can beach the boat, inflate the floating island, and spend the afternoon in the shallows. The diverse landscape — from rolling Texas countryside on the southern shores to rocky Oklahoma bluffs in the north — makes every stretch of the lake feel different.

For groups coming from the northern DFW suburbs (Frisco, McKinney, Sherman, Denison), Lake Texoma is barely 60–75 miles away — genuinely a quick day trip that delivers a dramatically bigger lake experience than anything closer to home.

Best for: Scenic experiences, destination weekends, groups who want something visually dramatic, PK Lake regulars

Possum Kingdom Lake — PK Lake to anyone who's been there — is widely considered one of the most beautiful lakes in Texas. Located in the Palo Pinto hills about 90 miles west of Fort Worth, it features dramatic limestone cliffs, deep crystal-clear water, and the iconic Hell's Gate passage: a narrow channel flanked by two towering canyon walls that opens into some of the most spectacular wakesurf water in the state.

The combination of clear, deep water (up to 145 feet in places) and naturally protected coves makes PK Lake exceptional for wakesurfing — conditions here are often glassier and cleaner than the DFW lakes simply because the surrounding terrain shelters the water from wind. The scenery makes every run feel different, and Hell's Gate is a landmark every first-time visitor needs to experience from the water.

Most groups who come to PK Lake pair the charter with a cabin rental for a full weekend. The combination of great cabin availability, the Hell's Gate party atmosphere on summer weekends, and some of the best wakesurf water in Texas makes it one of our favorite charters to run.

Best for: Weekend cabin trips, groups looking for a bucket-list wakesurf experience, Hochatown cabin stays

Broken Bow Lake in southeast Oklahoma is in a category entirely its own. Fed by cold, clear mountain tributaries from the Ouachita Mountains and protected by the Army Corps of Engineers — meaning no private development on the shoreline, no docks lining the banks — Broken Bow has 180 miles of completely natural, undeveloped shoreline wrapped in dense Ouachita forest.

The water clarity at Broken Bow is unlike anything you'll find at the Texas lakes — rocky-bottomed and mountain-fed, it takes on a deep green-blue tint on calm mornings that feels more like the Pacific Northwest than Oklahoma. Combined with the mountain scenery and the absence of shoreline development, a charter here genuinely feels like a different world from a DFW lake day.

The nearby town of Hochatown has exploded in popularity as a cabin destination from DFW — an excellent base for a Two- or three-night trip with a charter day as the centerpiece experience on the water.

Best for: Oklahoma getaways, groups combining boating with Lake Murray State Park activities, DFW groups looking for a less-known Oklahoma destination

Lake Murray is Oklahoma's crown jewel state park — the state's first and largest, sitting just off I-35 outside Ardmore, Oklahoma, about 90 miles north of Dallas. Widely considered the clearest and most beautiful lake in Oklahoma, it's a partially spring-fed reservoir with striking turquoise water, wooded rolling hills, and the iconic Tucker Tower — a five-story limestone structure perched on a cliff above the water with 360-degree views of the lake.

At 5,728 acres, Lake Murray is smaller and more intimate than Texoma or Lewisville, which means a different kind of day on the water — quieter, more scenic, with easy access to coves and the kind of natural setting that feels genuinely removed from city life. The entire lake sits inside Lake Murray State Park, so there's no private development on the shoreline — just forested hills and the kind of preserved natural beauty that's rare this close to the DFW metroplex.

As a general rule, the farther you're willing to drive, the more spectacular the scenery gets. All of our DFW-area lakes are fantastic for a great day of wakesurfing — but if you've done Lewisville and Grapevine and you're ready for something that will genuinely take your breath away, Possum Kingdom and Broken Bow are the upgrade.
